The Collection is continuously updated. it has a spacious and well ventilated reading room for boys and girls. Normaly working hours of the library and reading room are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Department of Physics is one of the core Departments of the Science Faculty since the College was established in 1968 and is situated at the fifth floor of main building of this institution. It has a very well-equipped laboratories for Degree College as well as junior college students. The Degree College Physics Lab. has an equally equipped dark room attached to it. It also has computers along with the printer and the internet facility.
The laboratories are airy, well-lit and have ample space for storing the instruments used in Physics Practical. The stabilized power supply is provided in the laboratories. Sufficient number of electrical boards and switches are available in the laboratories for performing electrical, electronics and optics experiments. The LPG supply with 35 tap points is available in the laboratories for performing heat and thermodynamics experiments. A refrigerator is also available in the laboratories. A drill machine and necessary tools too are part of the laboratories for doing the minor repair of instruments
Physics laboratories are well equipped with sufficient number of instruments like CRO's, CRO Trainer, Sine / Square wave generators, Power supplies, Digital / analog Volt meters and Ammeters, LCR meter, Transistor Curve Tracer, Circuit Boards, Microprocessor kits, Optical Benches, Spectrometers, LASER sources, Microscopes, Telescopes, Sodium lamps and Mercury lamps etc.
The Chemistry Department of Maharashtra College, established in 1968, is one of the most versatile, dynamic and largest department in the college. It caters to the largest number of Junior as well as Degree College students of Science Faculty and is well-known for its teaching and research accomplishments. The Department is served by a highly qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching faculty along with efficient co-operative non-teaching staff. Four Faculty members – Dr. Ahamad. M.H. Shaikh, Dr. Julekha Shaikh, Dr. Nilima Dixit and Dr. Mayuri Joshi are recognized Ph. D guides in Chemistry at the University of Mumbai.
The Department is located on the fourth floor of main building of college. It has well equipped separate airy laboratories with required chemicals and proper work stations for Degree College as well as Junior college students along with a well-equipped Physical Chemistry laboratory, Analytical Laboratory, Chemistry Store room, Balance room and Chemical Preparation room. The laboratories are maintained with proper ventilation and gaseous exhaust system along with all necessary requirement for safety purpose like first aid facility, fire extinguishing system and eye wash station.
The labs are also equipped with instruments like pH meters, Potentiometers, Conductivity meters, Colorimeters, Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, Polarimeter, Sonicator, digital balances etc. Internet facility for browsing net and departmental library with large number of Text books and reference books are also available for faculty and students to study Chemistry in more effective manner.
The Department provides a vibrant environment for faculty and students to foster the spirit of scientific inquiry. For this purpose, along with theory and practical classes, extra-curricular activities such as Conferences, Seminars, Group discussions, live demonstrations, Brain storming sessions, Industrial visits, Guest lectures, etc. are conducted by department for the benefit of students. Every year, eminent resource persons are invited under Chemistry Club of South Mumbai Colleges to inspire and motivate students about the latest trends in chemistry courses that provide opportunities for further studies in Material science, Nano science and technology, Green Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Environmental Science, and other related fields. The department plans to start M. Sc in Analytical Chemistry and develop well equipped research laboratory in future.
Botany Department has three separate laboratories for B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. The labs are well equipped for undergraduates, post graduates and research students to perform various botany practicals which are necessary for the study of structure, properties and biochemical processes of all plant life, plant classification, plant diseases and interactions of plants with physical environment and other living organisms. The laboratories are spacious with good ventilation and with required instruments to cover the syllabus such as dissecting microscope, compound microscope, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, centrifuge machine, hot air oven, Soxhlet apparatus, autoclave, Laminar Air Flow, cold storage, water bath, camera lucida, B.O.D. thermometer and rotary shaker. It is rich with well preserved and maintained specimens, charts and herbariums to ease teaching and learning. Laboratories are installed with projectors, enough computers with high speed internet connection to carry research activities and to perform Bioinformatics practicals.
The Department of Zoology, established in 1968, has a spacious, well-ventilated and well-light laboratory approved by the University of Mumbai. The lab has a large collection of animal specimens, permanent slides, charts, models, and skeletons, enabling students with an exciting first-hand experience. The lab also has energy-efficient state-of-the-art equipments necessary for undergraduate studies as per the University of Mumbai's syllabus. Incubators, ovens, centrifuges, homogenizers, pH metres, electrophoresis equipments, Autoclave, conductivity metre, colorimeters, highly sensitive weighing machines, refrigerators, and dissecting and compound microscopes are all part of the zoology lab. Chemicals and glassware are sufficient to fulfil the requirements of students to conduct experiments. Standard safety precautions are implemented in the lab. Students of first year learn to handle chemicals and devices with care and skill. The lab also contains fire extinguishers and other safety equipment. The lab is ICT-enabled, with a laptop, overhead LCD projector, and high speed internet. We have a well-qualified, cooperative teaching and non-teaching team that is continuously on the lookout for new approaches to satisfy the students' educational needs. This department intends to expand the laboratory's current capacity to suit the demands of higher education and research”.
